Picture this: It’s 2007, I’ve just graduated Art School, and the turmoil of the Great Recession hits… hard. Jobs were scarce, hope seemed fleeting for my career, and I found myself juggling multiple low-level roles—from tech support to retail, all while freelancing to beef up my portfolio. (3 jobs!)
Then by happenstance, I meet Toby Rosner.
We met through another client of mine (Lynda MacDonald Keith!), and she immediately stood out as someone I should look up to. Toby wasn’t just a mentor; she was a masterclass in navigating client relations, deadline management, and self-promotion… and through all that how to be abundantly kind. She saw that while I wasn’t the most experienced person, I had grit, and in many ways took me under her wing.
Toby had a significant impact on my career trajectory. She introduced me to her cousin, Asaph Benun, leading to a pivotal opportunity at Mike Nethercott’s firm, deecipher—a stepping stone that would eventually lead me to start my own business.
What makes Toby’s mentorship even more remarkable is her own career trajectory. Having transitioned from multiple high-ranking Marketing positions in the tech sector—a notoriously challenging environment for women—to impactful work in the nonprofit sector, Toby showed me what resilience and adaptability really look like.
Today, we celebrate women like Toby Rosner, who not only navigate their own professional journeys with grace and determination but also commit to lifting others up along the way. Her mentorship is a testament to the impact that thoughtful guidance and unwavering support can have on an individual’s career.
On International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate mentors like Toby, who redefine what it means to guide and inspire.
